The fine print
privacy policy.
Last updated: October 2026
This site belongs to Brittany M. Brown, a journalist based in Memphis, Tennessee. This policy explains what information is collected when you use it, why, and what choices you have. In short: I only collect what you choose to send me, I use it to respond to you or send the newsletter you asked for, and I never sell it.
what I collect
- Contact form. Your first and last name, email address, the topic you choose (story tip, freelance assignment, on the record, or something else), and your message.
- Newsletter sign-up. Your email address.
- Basic site data. Like most websites, this site’s host collects standard technical information automatically, such as your browser type, device, pages visited, and the site that referred you. This is used in aggregate to understand how the site is used.
how I use it
- To read and reply to messages, tips, and assignment requests.
- To send the newsletter to people who signed up for it. Every email includes a link to unsubscribe.
- To keep the site working and secure, and to understand which pages are useful.
tips and sources
If you are sharing a story tip, please know that this contact form is not an anonymous or encrypted channel. Don’t include anything in the form that could put you at risk. Instead, tell me you would like a more secure way to talk, and we can arrange one.
who else sees it
This site is hosted by Squarespace, which stores form submissions and newsletter sign-ups on my behalf and processes them under its own privacy policy. Newsletter emails are sent through my email provider. I don’t sell, rent, or trade your information, and I don’t share it with anyone else unless the law requires it.
cookies
Squarespace uses cookies that are necessary for the site to function and, if enabled, analytics cookies that help me understand site traffic. You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings. Some parts of the site may not work as expected without them.
how long I keep it
I keep messages for as long as I need them to respond and follow up. Newsletter addresses are kept until you unsubscribe or ask me to remove you.
your choices
You can ask to see, correct, or delete the personal information I have about you at any time, and you can unsubscribe from the newsletter using the link in any email. Depending on where you live, you may have additional rights under local law.
children
This site is not directed to children under 13, and I don’t knowingly collect their information.
changes
If this policy changes, the updated version will be posted on this page with a new date.
